Cowbirds

April 29, 2014

The first Cowbirds were sighted at the end of April. They have a nasty habit of dropping their eggs in other birds nests. Sometimes they even knock existing eggs out of the nest to make room for one of their eggs. Fortunately, we only feed our bird friends Black sunflower seeds. Cowbirds do not like this menu item, so they quickly move on. I enjoy helping them leave.

Some humans are not satisfied with that and check the birdnests for Cowbird eggs. When found, the cowbird eggs quickly leave the nest. The eggs can be distinguished pretty easily.
